Sarah Medway

  • Sarah is a painter who spent her formative years on the north Norfolk coast, where her perception was flooded daily by the magic of water, wide skies and the constantly changing light. She has an ongoing fascination for polarities, water and light, and the complex and organic patterns found in nature.

‘My passion has always been the natural world, and my visual language is often aqueous and lucent’.

Her recent works look to capture and explore the intangible and elusive qualities of the imagination. In these conjured realms, she can create her own rules and defy the constraints of the physical world.

  • Sarah has taken part in over 150 Group Exhibitions and 25 Solo Shows both in the UK and abroad. In the UK these include Tate Britain, Royal Academy and RCA, whilst internationally these include the Brooklyn Art Library and Austin Museum of Art, USA, Gallery Seven, Hong Kong and the 58th Venice Biennale, Italy.

Her work is available in the form of gouache paintings on watercolour paper.

  • What has been a stand out exhibition for inspiration?

Anselm Keifer, at White Cube in Bermondsey. I found his forest paintings with gold leaf,

oil, sand, ash and lead foil particularly inspiring,

  • What's the project you're most proud of?

My largest Art Commission to date; fifty-six oil paintings for the Aft of the P&O Britannia. It was launched and named by HM the Queen in Southampton in March, 2015.

  • What's the one thing in the art industry that's not talked about, which you think should be?

With so many talented artists leaving Art School every year, the actual reality and difficulty of selling enough work to make a living isn’t made clear enough. There just aren’t enough galleries, art dealers or clients to keep all artists afloat.

  • What would your alternative career be?

A Psychologist. Primarily using talk and behavioural therapy and empathy to help those with mental health problems.
