Environmental Mission

The world is facing a series of linked environmental crises, and arts organisations have an important role to play in addressing them. We may be small, but could have a disproportionately large impact on the environment, mainly due to a great deal of international travel, arts shipping, and high use of energy and materials. We need to act urgently to reduce these impacts in line with what science is telling us. We have an opportunity to use our public platform to set a positive example, to encourage and support others to take action and help shift the public debate.

We are a registered member of the Gallery Climate Coalition, who are making great strides in increasing the awareness across the art world of the need for action. Within one year, we aim to qualify for their Active Member badge, which we will be able to display here in 2024. The badge is not a certification of sustainability but instead recognises actions that have been taken. Watch this space.

  • At Caelo, our mission is to promote sustainably sourced contemporary art and homeware and to inspire audiences to engage with their local cultures. To fulfil this, we need to be aware of our main direct environmental impacts. We have committed to tackling these impacts by:

    • Becoming an active member of the Gallery Climate Coalition, and adhering to their recommended guidelines
    • Sustainably procuring stock, and discussing ways in which our makers can increase their energy efficiency and reduce waste
    • Selling locally so that purchases are collected, or delivered by green courier
    • Shipping by sea, rail or road rather than air, when selling nationally or internationally
    • Ensuring our packing materials are reusable or recyclable, as a step towards zero-waste operations
    • Moving towards ‘paperless’ with digital marketing and finance
    • Regularly calculating the carbon footprint of our operations, to track progress and improvements
